Return-to-Play Ladder

Athletic Development · All Ages

Obj: The injured player's structured road back — staged reintegration from clearance to full contention: medical partnership honored, re-injury risk managed, and the athlete's confidence rebuilt alongside the tissue (14.7's protocols; J-14's flags' destination). Field/Facility: Per stage. Equip: Per stage; the medical documentation governs throughout. Org: The ladder's stages, each gated by criteria (medical clearance where required, symptom-free completion of the prior stage always): Stage 1 — individual technical work at walk-jog intensities (touches return first; the ball is rehab's best friend); Stage 2 — linear running progressions (J-02/J-03's mechanics as the rebuild's frame — injuries often began as mechanics; the return fixes what the absence allowed); Stage 3 — change of direction and deceleration reintroduced (J-04's school at graded intensities — the confidence stage, coached patiently); Stage 4 — non-contact team training (the session's flow rejoined, contact moments excluded — the coach briefed specifically, every session); Stage 5 — full contact training (E-21's duels the final gate — contact confidence verified, not assumed); Stage 6 — match minutes staged (the minutes plan written — 20', then 45', then full, adjusted by response; 7.7's playing-time communication covering the journey). Load and symptom logs throughout (14.7's injury log closing the loop); the psychological strand explicit (fear of re-injury named and worked — 7.5's resilience log's most important entries). CP: (1) Stages are earned, never scheduled (the calendar serves the criteria, not the reverse — "he's back Saturday" is a criteria question); (2) the mechanics rebuild is the re-injury shield (the ladder's middle is where the future is protected); (3) the returning player is coached MORE, not less (attention is the reintegration's currency — the drifting returner is the club's failure). Prog/Reg: The ladder IS the progression/regression system — any symptom returns the stage. Mist: C: pressure-timed returns (big games are not clearance criteria — the DOC's protection, 12.6's absorbing role, applies to injury pressure too); P: stage-skipping enthusiasm (the criteria explained as the shield they are). Time: Per injury; reviewed weekly with medical input. Out: Returns completed at rate without re-injury spikes (the metric that grades the ladder); availability KPIs served the honest way; players returning confident, not just cleared. Var: GK ladder (dive-impact staging inserted between stages 3–4 — the GK Director + medical partnership's version). Diag: Six-stage ladder with gate criteria at each rung, the ball present from stage 1, contact gate at stage 5, staged-minutes plan at stage 6, symptom-log feedback arrows returning down the ladder.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
