Catch-or-Parry Decisions

Goalkeeping · U12–U19

Obj: The handling decision tree — catch when clean, parry when not, and parries with ADDRESSES (wide and low, never central). Field: Goal + service arc. Equip: Goal, balls, cones, target zones wide of the posts. Org: Serve spectrum forcing the tree: clean-pace shots (catch), fizzed/wet/awkward balls (parry to the marked wide zones — the parry is a PASS to safety, scored by zone), dipping swervers (the tip-over/round). The coach's serve mix makes the decision live; wrong choices teach loudly (a dropped catch attempt or a central parry = rebound chaos staged instantly, G-20's finishers waiting — realism as consequence). CP: (1) When in doubt, parry OUT (the decision's default under uncertainty); (2) parry with firm wrists to the zones — deflections are steered, not suffered; (3) catch what's catchable (over-parrying donates corners). Prog: Traffic screens (I-13's sightlines); wet-ball rounds (water applied — February's truth). Reg: Announced serve types; slower pace. Mist: P: hero-catching the uncatchable; C: training parries without rebound consequences attached. Time: 12 min. Out: Tree decisions correct at rate; parries landing in safe zones (counted). Var: Second-save chains (every parry's rebound live — I-16 merged). Diag: Goal with serve spectrum arrows, decision fork (catch icon vs. parry arrows to shaded wide-low zones), central parry crossed out with a rebound-chaos warning.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
