Cutback City

Finishing & Final Third · U13–U19

Objectives: Byline cutbacks as the club's preferred cross; four-point box occupation (near/spot/far/top); finishing one-touch from cutback angles. Serves 2.7.1–2.7.2.
Field: Final third, full width, big goal + GK; counter-gate at halfway. Equipment: goal, mannequins for retreat line (early), bibs, ball supply at wide pockets.
Organization: Phase 1 (pattern, 10 min): winger receives in the wide pocket, attacks the byline past a mannequin, cuts back to arriving runners hitting the four spots — rotate all arrival roles, both sides. Phase 2 (live, 20 min): 7v6+GK final-third game; attacking team scores double from any byline cutback; defense scores by escaping through the counter-gate (keeps defending honest and trains our rest defense).
Coaching points: (1) Win the byline — the extra two yards turns defenders' heads; (2) cutback goes behind the retreating line to the spot or top; (3) arrivals time runs to strike moving forward — never waiting flat-footed in the box.
Progressions: Live fullback on the winger → add recovering midfielder (cutback window shrinks — decision: cutback vs. early low cross) → full 9v8 from halfway build.
Regressions: No defenders in box phase 1 · coach serves the cutback so arrivals get clean reps.
Common mistakes: Players: crossing early and high out of habit (comfort ball, worst xG); all four runners arriving to the same spot; winger cutting back with no one home — arrivals are everyone's job. Coaches: only coaching the crosser — 80% of this session is the runners.
Timing: 30 min combined. Expected outcomes: Cutback goals in the live game; four spots occupied on ≥80% of entries (count them).
Variations: Weak-side winger arriving far post as the featured scorer · U11/U12 version in 9v9 spacing with the "spot" simplified to penalty-mark.
Diagram description: Final third; winger's path down the right touchline to byline, cutback arrow to penalty spot; four numbered runner arrows: near post, spot, far post, top of box; counter-gate marked at halfway.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
