The 8-Second Rule Game

Transitions · U13–U19

Obj: Counter-attack shot discipline — the break must strike within 8 seconds or convert to control: the rule that keeps counters honest and endings decisive (2.6.3's clock made law). Field: 60×40yd, goals + GKs. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs, a big visible timer if available (theater helps). Org: 8v8. Every regain starts the count (bench group counts aloud — participation and pressure at once): shots within 8 seconds = goals count DOUBLE; at second nine, the break's license expires — the team must complete three securing passes (the deliberate down-shift into 2.6.3's "keep" mode) before scoring normally. The rule's genius is the ending it forces: breaks stop dying of old age in the corner; they either strike or transform, and players FEEL the moment the window closes. CP: (1) Eight seconds is longer than panic thinks and shorter than dribbling believes — two passes and a shot fit comfortably, four passes don't; (2) the down-shift at nine is a skill: tempo drops, heads lift, the rest-defense sets (F-07's structure arriving as the counter's insurance matures); (3) shot selection inside the window still applies — 8 seconds licenses urgency, not lunacy (G-28's chance-quality lens rides along). Prog: Window shrinks to 6 for regains in the attacking half (F-12's heist logic); the count silent (internal clocks, F-02's graduation). Reg: 10-second windows; the down-shift simplified to "keep the ball." Mist: P: forcing terrible shots at second seven for the double (the audit: was a better option ON? — urgency and judgment coached as partners, never rivals); C: letting the count become noise (the bench's count must stay sharp or the pressure evaporates — rotate counters). Time: 16 min. Out: Breaks with decisive endings; the strike-or-transform fork automatic; internal transition clocks calibrated. Var: GK-start rounds (F-06's launches on the same clock — claim to shot in 12). Diag: Regain with the count starting, break arrows compressing toward a shot at second six with double badge, alternate path showing the second-nine down-shift into a secured possession web.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
