Regain-and-Release Wingers

Transitions · U13–U19

Obj: Wide outlets on regains — the winger's transition identity: released on the steal, isolated at speed, the break's fastest lane (10.7's transition role isolated). Field: 60×40yd, wide channels marked, goal + GK. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs. Org: 7v7 central possession-battle with both wingers per team stationed in opposite wide channels (untouchable until a regain). On any regain, the winning team's FAR-SIDE winger releases upfield (the near-side one shows for the outlet pass — two different jobs, alternating by which side wins it), and the break targets him: the diagonal release into his channel = the heist's favorite pass. Breaks finishing through the released winger = 3 pts; his 1v1 vs. the recovering fullback runs live (A-23/E-16's duel, born in transition — its truest habitat). CP: (1) Wingers in the possession phase are coiled, not idle: read the battle, time the release ON the steal (F-06's gamble law); (2) the release pass travels DIAGONALLY into the path — flat sideline passes let the fullback recover goal-side (B-34's diagonal supremacy, at sprint); (3) the released winger's first touch decides the duel: attack the space before the fullback sets (A-16's chase mathematics). Prog: Recovering fullbacks released simultaneously (honest races); the trailing 8 arrives for the cutback (G-14's arrival chained to the break). Reg: Uncontested releases; channels widened. Mist: P: wingers drifting into the central battle from boredom (the coil is the discipline — C-22's width law under transition's temptation); C: releasing only to the fast winger (both wings train or the team leans). Time: 16 min. Out: Release timing; diagonal outlet passing; transition 1v1s at full speed. Var: GK-launch integration (I-09 throws straight to released channels — F-06 merged). Diag: Central battle with regain star, far winger's release sprint up his channel, diagonal outlet arrow meeting his path, recovering fullback's chase angle, near winger showing short as the alternate.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
