The Low-Block Fortress

Pressing & Defending · U15–U19

Obj: Defending deep — rare for us, required of us: the compact low block for protecting leads, surviving red cards, and away days when the model's front-foot default must bow to the game state (2.12's chaos states, made competent). Field: Defensive third + 10yd, full width. Equip: Goal, cones, balls, bibs, GK. Org: Defending 10 in a 4-4-1 low block (or 4-4 + 1 outlet) vs. attacking 10 + 2 neutrals (the overload simulating the siege). The fortress laws: block width compresses to the box's width (concede the wings' crossing range, own the box — E-15's bodies ready); the lone striker holds the counter-outlet line (his hold-up is the pressure-release, A-24 under siege); shifts stay connected at HALF the mid-block's distances; clearances have addresses (the outlet's chest or the wide channels, never central regifts). Survive 4-minute sieges = 2 pts; outlet-held counters that cross halfway = 3 (the fortress with a sword). CP: (1) Deep defending is a controlled emotional state: calm, loud, and violent in the box — panic concedes, poise survives; (2) the second ball after every clearance is the siege's real battleground (D-22's armies defending); (3) the outlet is sacred: someone ALWAYS stays for the ball out — sieges end via the exit, not the walls. Prog: 8v11 sieges (red-card rehearsal, 2.12's mandate); time-and-score framing ("6 minutes, 1-0, away"). Reg: Even numbers; shorter sieges. Mist: P: block players pressing out solo from frustration (the fortress falls from inside); C: moral discomfort with teaching this (the model's COMPLETENESS includes its exceptions — 2.12 is curriculum, not betrayal). Time: 16 min (monthly; weekly in tournament seasons). Out: Siege survival competence; outlet counters; game-state maturity. Var: Set-piece siege (corners against, repeatedly — H-03 under fatigue). Diag: 4-4-1 compressed into the box's width, attacking overload around it, connected shift arrows, clearance to the outlet's held-up chest with counter arrow beyond halfway.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
