Defending Transitions Home

Pressing & Defending · U13–U19

Obj: The back line vs. counters — 3v3 and 4v3 defending when the press is beaten and the field is huge: delay, angles, and the art of losing slowly until help arrives (E-06 grown up, F-10's defensive mirror). Field: 60×40yd from halfway to goal. Equip: Goal, cones, balls, bibs, GK. Org: Counter waves: attackers break 3v2, 3v3, and 4v3 (rotating) against our back-line pairs/trios + GK, with two recovery runners released 3 seconds late (E-13's religion arriving as the cavalry). The defenders' laws: first defender ANGLES the carrier away from goal-center (never wins it, never dives — steers); second protects the through-ball lane; everyone retreats at the counter's speed until the recovery arrives, THEN the collective steps. GK plays every wave (I-10/I-12 in context). CP: (1) The counter's enemy is TIME — every second you buy kills it (their runners tire, ours arrive); (2) show the carrier WIDE and BACKWARD-shoulder, never let the middle open; (3) the moment help arrives, the mode flips: passive delay becomes aggressive squeeze (the switch called by the deepest defender). Prog: Attackers add a trailing runner (the second wave — F-10's full picture); defenders start with backs turned (worst-case realism). Reg: 3v2 with early recovery release; walking pace install. Mist: P: the first defender lunging at the carrier in transition (the single worst decision in football, taught by its consequences here); C: only training even-number transitions (Saturday's counters are born ugly — rehearse ugly). Time: 16 min. Out: Delay-then-squeeze rhythm; through-lane protection; counters surviving to become nothing. Var: Post-corner version (defending the counter after our own set piece — H-02's rest-defense reality). Diag: 3v2 counter with first defender's steering angle away from center, second protecting the through-lane, recovery runners' arrows arriving, squeeze-flip moment marked at their arrival.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
