The 4-4-2 Trap Front

Pressing & Defending · U15–U19

Obj: The alternate press shape installed — two strikers hunting in tandem: when we press with a front two, how the curves, traps, and behind-structure change (2.4's scheme flexibility). Field: 60×44yd. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs, goals. Org: Defending 10 in the 4-4-2 press vs. a building 10 with a back four (the shape this press exists to hunt — two strikers vs. two CBs is the honest fight the 4-3-3's front three doesn't offer). The front two's tandem craft: one presses the ball-CB in a curve showing ONE side; the other shadows the pivot WHILE closing the second CB's lane (the hardest job in pressing — E-04 at its peak); midfield four links behind (E-18's assignments re-mapped). Wins in their half = 3 pts. CP: (1) The front two are one animal: their curves must agree on which side the press shows; (2) the trailing striker's cover-shadow on the pivot is the shape's hinge — lose it and their 6 kills everything; (3) when to choose this shape (scout-driven: teams whose CBs can't carry — 8.6's recommendation line) is taught WITH the shape. Prog: Building team morphs to back three (D-12 from the other side — the arms race live); trap-side versions (herd everything left). Reg: Walkthrough curves; building team two-touch. Mist: P: the front two pressing as individuals (tandem or nothing); C: installing this as a downgrade ("we couldn't press properly so...") — it's a scalpel, framed as one. Time: 18 min. Out: Second press shape match-ready; shape-selection literacy begun. Var: In-match switch drills (4-3-3 press to 4-4-2 trap front on a bench signal — U17+ game management, 2.12). Diag: 4-4-2 press shape with tandem front curves agreeing left, trailing striker's shadow on the pivot, midfield links behind, choose-this-when scout note inset.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
