The Wolf Pack

Pressing & Defending · U11–U14

Obj: Three-player pressing units — first wolf presses, second anticipates the pass, third balances: the pack that hunts together eats. Field: 25×20yd. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs. Org: 5 attackers keep the ball vs. a rotating pack of 3. The pack's roles are explicit and called: WOLF 1 (curve-press the carrier), WOLF 2 (press the most likely NEXT receiver — arriving as the ball does), WOLF 3 (screen the central escape). Wins = 2 pts; wins where Wolf 2 intercepted the first pass = 4 (anticipation paid double). Packs rotate every 90s; roles rotate within packs. CP: (1) Wolf 2 presses the FUTURE, not the present — leave as the pass is struck; (2) the pack stays connected: 10 yards max between wolves; (3) if the ball escapes the pack's zone: stop, re-form, re-hunt (no solo chases into the wilderness). Prog: 6v3; the pack must channel wins to a target gate (steered hunting). Reg: 5v3 in a smaller grid; coach assigns roles aloud. Mist: P: three wolves on one ball (the pack's death — name Wolf 2's job relentlessly); C: rotating too slowly (pressing quality dies with fatigue — fresh packs only). Time: 14 min. Out: Second-defender anticipation; connected hunting; the 2.4.2 principle embodied. Var: Trigger-launch version (pack may only hunt on triggers — patience layered in). Diag: Possession ring with three wolves: curved press arrow (W1), anticipation arrow to the next receiver (W2), central screen position (W3), connection lines between them.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
