Half-Court Press Escape

Build-Out & Progression · U13–U19

Obj: Building out of a genuine trap — escaping organized half-court pressure into instant counter-threat. Field: Half field + two counter-goals at the far end of a 15yd second zone. Equip: Goal, cones, balls, bibs, pug goals. Org: 7 builders (GK+4+2) vs. 7 pressers who set a REAL half-court trap: front three seal back-passes, midfield locks the pivots, one side invited then slammed. Builders escape into the second zone; reaching it cleanly = 1 pt, but scoring in a counter-goal within 8 seconds of escaping = 3 (the escape's PURPOSE is what follows — tired presses concede transitions, 2.6). Pressers score normally on wins (their E-12 trap training runs simultaneously — dual-curriculum session). CP: (1) Traps have exits by design — usually the third-man bounce out of the slammed side or the first-time switch BEFORE the slam closes (timing beats strength); (2) recognize the invitation: when one side feels easy, it's bait — go there with your exit pre-scanned or don't go; (3) after the escape: SPRINT into the transition — the 8-second window is the reward for all that composure. Prog: Press varies trap sides without pattern; second-zone defenders added (contested counters). Reg: 7v5 press; 12-second window. Mist: P: celebrating the escape and jogging (the window closes — escape-then-burst is one action); C: letting the press trap lazily (both curricula die without honest pressing). Time: 18 min. Out: Trap recognition and exits; escape-to-threat conversion. Var: Match-scenario framing ("we're 1-0 up away, they've pushed on" — 2.12's context). Diag: Half field with press trap slamming the left side, third-man bounce exit arrow, escape into second zone, counter-goal strike within an 8-second clock icon.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
