Bait-Side Builds

Build-Out & Progression · U14–U19

Obj: Deliberate press-baiting patterns — build INTO the crowded side to release the far side (2.2.3 as choreography). Field: Half field + 15yd. Equip: Goal, cones, balls, bibs. Org: GK + 6 builders vs. 6 pressers. The pattern: build deliberately to the chosen bait side (CB-fullback-pivot triangle passes, real but contained), drawing the press's weight across; the trigger — their far-side winger pinches in — releases the escape: GK or CB switches to the abandoned fullback/winger who progresses into vacated space. Points only for far-side progressions AFTER a 3-pass bait (unbaited switches score zero — patience enforced). Sides alternate. CP: (1) Bait passes are real passes — sloppy bait gets punished, casual bait fools nobody (C-17's law in build geometry); (2) the WATCHER role: one player (GK or far CB) monitors the far side's abandonment while everyone else sells the bait — assign it; (3) the switch travels flat and fast — hang-time lets them recover (B-27's transfer law). Prog: Press coached to resist the bait (only 2 shift — attackers must then play THROUGH the short side: reading over pattern); live 11v11 goal-kick starts. Reg: Passive press shifting obediently; coach calls the switch moment. Mist: P: eyes flicking to the escape side during the bait (poker faces — B-16's discipline); C: over-drilling until the bait becomes predictable rhythm (vary pass counts). Time: 16 min. Out: Team-scale disguise; far-side escapes off genuine bait. Var: Bait-to-hatch hybrid (when they DON'T shift, the hatch zone is open behind their committed side — D-06 chained). Diag: Half field with bait triangle bottom-left drawing five pressers, watcher's eye icon, switch arc to abandoned right flank, vacated space shaded.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
