Fullback Decisions

Build-Out & Progression · U13–U19

Obj: The fullback's build menu — high-and-wide vs. tucked-inside, read from the opponent's press shape (10.3's core education). Field: Half field, full width. Equip: Goal, cones, balls, bibs. Org: GK + back four + pivot vs. 5 pressers whose winger behavior alternates by round (told secretly): Round A — their wingers press our CBs (fullbacks should stay HIGH and wide: the free men); Round B — their wingers mark our fullbacks (fullbacks TUCK inside, creating the 3-build with the pivot freed). The fullbacks must READ which world they're in from the first press wave — no announcements. Correct-read progressions = 2 pts. CP: (1) Watch their winger's first three steps: at your CB = stay wide and receive; at you = tuck and let the CB carry; (2) tucked fullbacks receive on the half-turn like pivots (B-20's craft arrives); (3) wide receptions on the touchline: first touch forward, never dead (A-20's worst-real-estate training pays here). Prog: Mixed presses (one side each behavior — asymmetric reads); wingers ahead of fullbacks coordinate (one wide, one inside — 2.8.6's law live). Reg: Coach announces the round type; passive wingers. Mist: P: fullbacks defaulting to childhood width regardless of the press; C: coaching the read without the reception craft both positions need. Time: 16 min. Out: Press-shape reading by fullbacks; both worlds' techniques. Var: Inverted-fullback attacking round (U16+: tuck to overload midfield in possession). Diag: Split diagram: Round A fullback high/wide starred with their winger on the CB; Round B fullback tucked inside with their winger tracking wide, pivot freed.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
