The Escape Hatch Install

Build-Out & Progression · U12–U19

Obj: The designed long pattern — target zones, flick mechanics, and second-ball armies rehearsed until "long" means "planned." Field: Full half + 20yd beyond halfway. Equip: Goal, cones, balls, bibs, marked 10×10yd target zones (left and right, 5–10yd inside halfway, wide-ish). Org: Phase 1 (8 min): GK/CB clips to the striker checking into a target zone; striker's menu — chest-set to the arriving 8, flick-on to the winger beyond, or pin-and-hold (A-24). The 8 and winger rehearse their second-ball geometry: one underneath the striker, one beyond him, ALWAYS. Phase 2 (10 min): live vs. 6 defenders — build short until the coach's "HATCH!" call (simulating a closed press), then execute; clean second-ball possession beyond halfway = 3 pts. CP: (1) The delivery has an address — the ZONE, not "up there"; (2) the striker never fights alone: second-ball spacing (one under, one over) is the pattern's soul; (3) after winning the second ball: play FORWARD first (the hatch exists to escape, not to restart the siege). Prog: Defense knows it's coming (honest contest); GK executes from open-play back-passes (I-17 pressure). Reg: Unopposed pattern; hand-serve to the striker. Mist: P: winger watching the flick instead of attacking its landing; C: training this rarely then blaming players when Saturday's press forces it (weekly minimum during fall). Time: 18 min. Out: The long ball transformed from panic to pattern; second-ball win rate tracked. Var: Two-striker version (U15+ 4-4-2 opponents make this real). Diag: Half field with clip trajectory to a shaded target zone, striker's three menu arrows, second-ball pair positioned under/over.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
