Big-Small Transfers

Positional & Possession Games · U13–U19

Obj: Grid-size contrast in one game — possession flowing between a big grid (switches, range) and a small grid (tight combinations), training the instant recalibration between geometries. Field: One 35×30yd grid connected by a 5yd gate to one 15×15yd grid. Equip: Cones, ball, bibs. Org: 7v7. Play starts in the big grid (5 passes required, switches scored); the ball may then transfer through the gate into the small grid, where BOTH teams flood in and the game becomes tight-space combination play (3 completed passes there = 2 pts) before transferring back out (a clean exit = 1 pt). The gate is the decompression valve — reading when to enter the phone booth and when to escape it. CP: (1) Big grid: heads up, range honest — play the geometry you're in (B-22 range, C-26 switches); (2) entering the gate: only with support pre-arriving (never dribble into the booth alone); (3) small grid: bodies close, one-touch bounces, protect-and-release (A-31's world) — then OUT before it collapses. Prog: Gate narrows; defenders may hold 2 back in the big grid (exits contested); time-limited booth visits (8 seconds then out — decision urgency). Reg: Bigger small-grid; free transfer timing. Mist: P: teams living in one grid (points balance forces both, but watch for grid-preference by player — it's positional aptitude data, 7.7); C: not naming the recalibration moment (the gate-crossing breath is the skill). Time: 16 min. Out: Geometry-switching fluency; booth-escape judgment. Var: Two small grids off one big (choice of booths — U16+). Diag: Large grid connected by a gate to a small grid, wide switch arrows in the big space, dense combination triangle in the small, exit arrow back through the gate.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
