One-Two-Three Tempo

Positional & Possession Games · U14–U19

Obj: Touch-count waves by zone — touch limits as tempo architecture: quick where crowded, composed where free. Field: 45×35yd in three vertical zones (build/middle/final). Equip: Cones, ball, bibs. Org: 8v8 end-to-end. Zone touch-rules: build zone = free touches (composure where the model demands courage — no panic-limits near your own goal); middle zone = two-touch (the crowded transit demands speed); final zone = one-touch combinations to score, but a dribbler may break the rule IF attempting a 1v1 (creativity's Zone 3 license written into law, 2.1.8). The inversion of common practice (most coaches limit touches at the back) is deliberate and explained to players: touch limits follow TRAFFIC, not fear. CP: (1) Build: take the touches the press allows — extra touches that bait are working touches (C-17); (2) middle: pre-scanned two-touch — the zone punishes the unprepared, which is the lesson; (3) final: one-touch chains or full-commitment 1v1s — the two doors, nothing between. Prog: Middle zone to one-touch (elite); defenders overload one zone (attackers re-route). Reg: Three-touch middle; final-zone two-touch. Mist: P: rushing the build zone out of habit (the free-touch rule is retraining panic); C: applying limits without explaining the traffic logic (the WHY is the transfer). Time: 16 min. Out: Zone-appropriate tempo automatic; touch limits understood as maps of traffic. Var: Flipped-zone rounds (defense told to press the build hard — now free touches get tested honestly). Diag: Field in three vertical zones labeled FREE/2/1, pass tempo shown as increasingly rapid arrow chains left to right, one 1v1 dribble arrow in the final zone flagged "license."

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
