The Switchboard

Positional & Possession Games · U13–U19

Obj: Mandatory-switch cycles against a shifting block — training the switch's timing, technique, and follow-up as one repeating loop. Field: 45×35yd. Equip: Cones, ball, bibs. Org: 8v8: possession team must switch the point (2+ lanes) every 6 passes or on the coach's "board!" call — but here's the craft: the defense knows the switch is coming (they're told!), so only well-disguised, well-timed switches survive. Completed switch vs. the informed defense = 2 pts; a switch that leads to a line-break within 3 passes = 4 (the switch is for something — space exploitation, not decoration). CP: (1) Against defenders expecting the switch: disguise (B-16) and tempo-change are everything — circulate calm, switch SHARP; (2) switch selection: through the pivot when their front jumps wide, direct diagonal when their midfield compresses (two roads, read which); (3) the far side attacks the switch's arrival — first touch forward, immediate line-break hunt (the 3-pass window). Prog: Defense may send two jumpers at predicted switches (interception war — disguise graded by survival); one-touch switch-reception rounds. Reg: Defense not informed (easier); 8-pass cycles. Mist: P: switching on schedule regardless of the picture (the count is a maximum, not a metronome); C: not tracking the follow-up window (switches without exploitation are just long sideways passes). Time: 16 min. Out: Switches surviving informed defenses; arrival-side aggression automatic. Var: Both-teams-switching version (whoever holds the ball owes switches — chaos scanning). Diag: Rectangle with defense shifted left, disguised switch arc to the right flank, arrival player's forward touch and line-break arrow within a 3-pass bracket.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
