Possession With Purpose Audit

Positional & Possession Games · U13–U19

Obj: A filmed possession game where every sequence is graded for purpose — the anti-sterile-possession session (2.1.1 enforced by evidence). Field: 40×35yd. Equip: Cones, ball, bibs, camera (any phone on a tripod), whiteboard. Org: 8v8 possession, normal rules — but filmed, and after each 5-min block, the group watches 2–3 sequences at the whiteboard and grades them together: did this sequence PROGRESS, SWITCH, PREPARE, or CIRCLE? (Circle = possession that asked the defense no questions — the only failing grade.) Players grade themselves before the coach speaks (8.9's pedagogy — question before answer). Points from play carry, but a "circle" verdict deletes that sequence's points retroactively. CP: (1) Every pass has a job — if you can't name it, it was probably a circle; (2) probing counts as purpose (passes that move defenders ARE preparation — the grade teaches the difference from passes that merely occur); (3) honest grading is the skill — defending your circle helps nobody. Prog: Players run the grading entirely (U16+); live-narration round (a resting player commentates purposes in real time — hilarious and diagnostic). Reg: Coach grades alone with gentle language; longer blocks. Mist: P: gaming the grade with frantic forced verticals (purpose ≠ panic); C: over-grading — three sequences per block maximum, then play. Time: 20 min including reviews. Out: Purpose vocabulary internalized; circling self-identified and self-correcting. Var: Match-film homework twin (grade 5 of Saturday's sequences — the same rubric travels, 6.2). Diag: Rectangle with pass web, whiteboard inset showing four purpose categories with checkmarks, camera icon on a tripod.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
