Width Wins

Positional & Possession Games · U11–U15

Obj: Winger-width pinned possession — proving spatially that held width creates interior room (the lesson kids only believe after feeling it). Field: 35×30yd, wide channels marked. Equip: Cones, ball, bibs. Org: 7v7, one winger per team locked to each wide channel (defenders may not enter channels unless the ball does). Two-phase scoring: Phase 1 (6 min) — wingers may NOT receive; they just hold width. Interior passes = points. Phase 2 (6 min) — identical but wingers unlocked. Between phases, ask the interior players where the space was — Phase 1's paradox (the never-passed-to wingers still created the room by pinning defenders' width-anxiety) is the session's revelation. CP: (1) Width works even when the ball never comes — your presence moves their shape (pinning explained, 2.1.3); (2) when the winger IS unlocked: receive open, attack immediately (the reward for patience); (3) interior players: play in the space the width bought — halfspaces live because wings hold. Prog: Channel defenders added (1v1s live, A-23 feed); switch-to-winger points doubled. Reg: Bigger interior; 7v5. Mist: P: wingers sneaking inside during Phase 1 (their discipline IS the experiment); C: skipping the between-phase question — the discussion is where the learning lands. Time: 15 min. Out: Width-as-service understood; the magnet resisted because the WHY landed. Var: One-side-only width round (asymmetric shape reading). Diag: Rectangle with wide channels, wingers stationed wide with "pin" arrows on nearest defenders, shaded interior space labeled "bought by width."

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
