Five Lanes

Positional & Possession Games · U13–U19; 6v6+2 for U11–U12

Objectives: Lane discipline, staggered heights, switching play to the free side. Serves 2.8 (grid laws) and 2.1.6.
Field: 44×36yd divided visibly into five vertical lanes. Equipment: lane markers, bibs ×3 colors, balls around the field.
Organization: 7v7 with 3 neutrals (two wide, one central pivot). Rules: max 2 same-team players per lane; a switch that crosses two+ lanes and is received cleanly = 1 point; 8 consecutive passes = 1 point. Play to transitions (team that wins ball attacks immediately under same rules).
Coaching points: (1) When the ball is on one wing, far players hold their lane — resist the magnet; (2) staggered heights in adjacent lanes create the diagonal; (3) the pivot's shoulders decide the switch — receive half-turned.
Progressions: Switches only count after 4+ passes (draw them in first — model's bait principle) → add goals/end zones for direction → limit neutrals to one touch.
Regressions: Remove lane-count rule, keep only the switch reward · add a fourth neutral.
Common mistakes: Players: drifting ball-side (lane crowding); switching without first fixing the opponent. Coaches: painting lanes but never referencing them; stopping play for lane violations instead of letting the scoring system teach.
Timing: 20–25 min. Expected outcomes: Visible field-tilt then reversal rhythm; far-side receivers getting time and space on switches.
Variations: Lanes scored only in halfspaces · "free man" version — one defender must always press ball, leaving a named free man to find.
Diagram description: Wide rectangle split into five vertical strips; two teams interspersed, neutrals marked with triangles at both touchlines and center; long arrow showing a two-lane switch.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
