The Metronome

Passing, Receiving & Rondos · U13–U19

Obj: Tempo control on command — the team's circulation speed as a dial the players themselves turn (2.1.1's "patience with purpose" trained explicitly). Field: 35×30yd. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs. Org: 8v5 possession. A designated "metronome" player (rotate every 3 min — every player learns to conduct, then the 6s/8s specialize, 10.4) sets tempo by calls and body language: "slow" (two-touch minimum, probing, make them chase), "up" (one-two touch, sharp angles), "NOW" (the break moment — next pass must be a line-breaker or switch). The group's compliance is the score: coach grades 1–5 per phase on whether the tempo actually changed. Defenders feel the changes — slow phases drag them out, NOW punishes them. CP: (1) Slow is an action, not a rest — probing passes that force defensive movement; (2) tempo changes are collective or they're nothing — the second the call comes, everyone's touch count changes; (3) the metronome reads the defense, not his own boredom: call NOW when they're stretched, not when you're tired of slow. Prog: Silent metronome (body language only); two metronomes must agree (communication); defense grows to 6. Reg: Coach conducts first rounds; three fixed phases per round. Mist: P: "slow" becoming sideways sterile passing with no probe (2.1.1's exact disease — name it); C: never letting players conduct (the whole point is transferring the dial). Time: 15 min. Out: Visible collective tempo shifts on player command; conductors emerging (leadership data, 7.5). Var: Match-state version: coach announces "80th minute, winning 1-0" and the metronome must choose the right tempo (37's game-management bridge). Diag: Rectangle with pass-web at two densities (slow probing web vs. sharp NOW arrow breaking lines), metronome player starred with call radiating.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
