The Y

Passing, Receiving & Rondos · U11–U19

Objectives: Execute and recognize third-man combinations: A→C→B when A→B is closed. Serves 2.1.4.
Field: 25×20yd, three mannequins/cones forming a defensive line, target player beyond. Equipment: mannequins, cones, balls, bibs.
Organization: Phase 1 (pattern): pivot (C) shows between mannequins; fullback (A) plays into striker (B)? No — B is "marked" (mannequin): A plays C, C sets or slides the pass to B arriving beyond the line. Rotate all roles. Phase 2 (live): 4v4+2 to two goals; goals scored off a third-man release count triple.
Coaching points: (1) The third man times his run as the first pass travels — arrive, don't wait; (2) C's first touch (or one-touch set) decides everything — play the way you face when marked; (3) disguise: A looks at B, plays C.
Progressions: Live defender on C → live back line (offside on) → finish on big goal with GK.
Regressions: Walk-through with coach narrating the triangle · remove defenders entirely.
Common mistakes: Players: third man leaving too late (pattern becomes two separate passes); C trying to turn when marked instead of setting. Coaches: drilling the pattern 30 minutes without transferring to live play — pattern is vocabulary, the game is the sentence.
Timing: 10 min pattern + 15 min live. Expected outcomes: Players call "third!" in the live game unprompted; triple-goals occur.
Variations: Left/right side mirrors · GK as A (build-out version) · U17 version vs. live pressing trap.
Diagram description: Y-shaped passing pattern: A at the stem, C at the junction between two mannequins, B beyond the line; numbered arrows 1 (A→C), 2 (C→B), curved run arrow for B.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
