Long-Short Rhythm

Passing, Receiving & Rondos · U13–U19

Obj: Alternating-range circulation — mixing short combinations with long switches so neither becomes a habit, and the rhythm change itself disorganizes defenses. Field: 45×35yd. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs. Org: 8v8 possession (or 7v7+2N): a point is scored only by a sequence — three short passes (≤10yd) followed by one long (≥25yd) completed, or the reverse (one long then three short). The scoreboard literally requires rhythm variety. Defenders quickly learn to jump the pattern; attackers must disguise where they are in the sequence — which is the entire lesson. CP: (1) Short passes draw the press in — that's what the long one is for (bait-then-break at team scale); (2) after a long switch, the next short combination happens where space is freshest — sprint to support the receiver; (3) disguise the sequence: don't stare down the switch on pass three. Prog: Sequences chain (short-short-short-long-short…) for continuous scoring; count hidden from defenders only (attackers whisper-track). Reg: 8v6; any-order ranges. Mist: P: telegraphing the long ball (defenders reading the count means disguise failed — discuss it, it's the point); C: letting long balls be hopeful clears — completion means controlled by a teammate. Time: 16 min. Out: Tempo/range variety as a conscious weapon; switches arriving off genuine bait. Var: Model-shape version with GKs (build → switch → build rhythm, D-08 sibling). Diag: Large rectangle, three short-pass chain arrows tight on one side, long diagonal arc to the far side, fresh short-chain beginning there.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
