Scan-Count Rondo

Passing, Receiving & Rondos · U10–U19, the club's staple

Objectives: Make scanning measurable and habitual; receiving on the back foot; passing tempo. Serves 2.1.2 and the scan benchmarks in Sections 3–4.
Field: 8×8yd (4v1) to 12×12yd (5v2). Equipment: cones, balls, bibs.
Organization: Standard rondo, but an outside coach/player loudly counts any receiver's scans in the second before reception ("two!"). Players score team points for splits (4v1) or third-man releases (5v2); individual points for receiving after a double scan.
Coaching points: (1) Scan as the ball travels to the player before you; (2) open hips before the ball arrives; (3) pass with the correct weight to the correct foot — tell the receiver which foot with your pass.
Progressions: 5v2 with third-man scoring only → two-touch max → defenders rewarded for intercepting the "lazy lane."
Regressions: 5v1 · unlimited touches · walk-through tempo with scan-calling only.
Common mistakes: Players: fake scans (head turns, eyes don't gather — test by asking "where was the far defender?"); ball-watching between actions. Coaches: letting the rondo become keep-away with no scoring criteria; grids too big (no pressure) or too small (no decisions).
Timing: 12–18 min as the technical block. Expected outcomes: Scan counts audibly rise; splits/third-man releases increase per round.
Variations: Positional rondo (players in model-relative positions) · GK included as +1 with feet only · U8 version: 4v0 pattern with scan-calls.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
