Overlap Introductions

Passing, Receiving & Rondos · U10–U12

Obj: The two-man wide game: overlap timing, the carrier's decision (use or refuse), communication. Field: 30×15yd wide channel to a byline + cutback cone target. Equip: Cones, balls, bibs. Org: Ball carrier and overlapper start level; carrier dribbles infield slowly (drawing the imaginary/mannequin defender), overlapper loops outside calling "hold-hold-NOW"; carrier releases into the path or — round 3 onward vs. a live defender — keeps and cuts inside if the defender tracks the run (the refusal is equally correct). Finish = cutback to the cone target zone. CP: (1) Overlap starts behind and bends wide — never flat beside; (2) the call owns the timing ("NOW" = release moment); (3) carrier's eyes stay forward — sell that you'll dribble, release late. Prog: Live fullback (use/refuse becomes real); add the far-post finisher on the cutback. Reg: Jog-through pattern, coach narrating. Mist: P: overlapper arriving level too early (offside school later, dead run now); C: forcing the release every rep — refusal reps teach the decision. Time: 14 min. Out: Timed overlaps with calls; first use/refuse reads. Var: Underlap version (inside loop) for U12; both = D-07 readiness. Diag: Wide channel, carrier's infield dribble arrow, overlapper's bending outside run, release pass to byline, cutback target shaded.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
