Escape Rooms

Ball Mastery & 1v1 · U10–U12; scales U13+

Objectives: Receive under back-pressure, protect the ball, and escape into space facing forward. Serves model principle 2.1.2 (play through pressure).
Field: Four 12×12yd grids. Equipment: 16 cones, 8 balls, 2 bib colors.
Organization: Pairs per grid. Server plays into attacker positioned with defender on his back; attacker must "escape the room" through any of 3 gate-marked sides facing forward with the ball under control. 45-second rounds, rotate roles/grids. Score: clean escapes.
Coaching points: (1) Scan over both shoulders while ball travels; (2) first touch away from pressure with the far foot; (3) use body/arm legally to feel the defender before the ball arrives.
Progressions: Live defender from the pass (no grace touch) → defender chooses side late → 2v2 with a bounce player → escape into a finishing action.
Regressions: Passive defender (grab-the-bib pressure only) → bigger grid → attacker gets a support player behind.
Common mistakes: Players: receiving square-on with no scan; touching into the defender; hiding behind "safe" back-passes when a turn is on. Coaches: letting servers deliver bad passes (the rep dies at delivery); coaching during the rep instead of between reps.
Timing: 16–20 min (4 rounds × 45s work per player + rotations).
Expected outcomes: By round 4, majority of receptions preceded by a double scan; escapes rise measurably round-over-round.
Variations: Weak-foot-only touches · escape must be a turn (no back-pass option) · GK version: receive back-pass under press, escape with a driven pass through a gate.
Diagram description: Square grid, server at south edge, attacker center with defender goal-side behind him, three gate pairs on north/east/west edges; arrow shows pass in, curved arrows show escape paths.

The 3-point rule: pick your three coaching points before the session and be ready to answer for them (Manual 5.4).
